Unfortunately, once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it became clear that we have a glaring domestic problem—the US has systemically dismantled our self-reliance on procuring and developing emergency goods necessary to combat such a crisis and created a dependency on manufacturing in other countries such as China—even by US Top 100 companies.

The Pandemic Changed Everything

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it became clear that the dismantling of our manufacturing base left us vulnerable in so many ways. We have seen the havoc supply chain delays have wreaked on our ability to get parts and finished products without delays.

The shortages caused, and the dramatic increases in container prices for goods shipped from abroad, have contributed to or caused the worst inflation we have seen in some 40 years. Nowhere has the lack of domestic manufacturing been more damaging than in the market for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

The US was forced to rely on imported PPE for our front line healthcare workers as we simply did not have enough domestic supply of NIOSH-approved N95 respirators or other high-quality face coverings. Our market was flooded with fake, counterfeit and ineffective imported mask, not capable of protecting Americans. The inability to have any confidence in the authenticity and effectiveness of imported masks is a key factor.
